CAREER STUDIO

The story of Career Studio begins with a single question: “What if?”

What if young individuals had a clear, guided, and personalized pathway to navigate the complex web of career choices?” “What if there was a way to translate the abstract concepts of personality traits and interests into concrete, actionable career guidance?

Motivated by this curiosity and the evident gap in the market, the idea of Career Studio was born.

Building Career Studio was a journey of understanding – understanding users and their aspirations, the importance of self-reflection, and the significance of choice. The platform’s development process was shaped by a series of logical steps, each element carefully crafted to guide users seamlessly through the complex maze of career decision-making.

Our aim has always been to make the journey to the perfect career less daunting and more intuitive, keeping the user’s needs, interests, and personality at the heart of the process. As the founder, every feature in Career Studio carries a piece of this vision – to empower individuals to make informed career decisions that align with their true selves.

And as the students navigate through Career Studio, my hope is that they will find not just a career, but a vocation that resonates with who they truly are. Because in the grand journey of life, fulfillment comes from doing what we love and doing it in a way that is true to ourselves.

The Features:
Understanding the User

At the heart of Career Studio is the user. The very first features I conceptualized were designed to help understand the user better: The Personality Assessment and Interest Assessment. In essence, these assessments aim to map out the user’s interests, strengths, and tendencies, acting as compasses to point users in the right direction.

The Personality Assessment is a scientifically-backed questionnaire designed to assess a user’s character traits and how they influence the way they work and interact with the world. The Interest Assessment, on the other hand, focuses on understanding what the user enjoys, what hobbies and passions they have. It was crucial to combine both these assessments because a fulfilling career isn’t just about what suits our personality; it’s also about what interests us.

Finding the Right Match

Once we have a solid understanding of the user, we enter the matching phase: Career Matches. Drawing from an extensive database of careers, the system cross-references the user’s personality and interests to suggest careers that might be a good fit. Every career has a detailed profile featuring job responsibilities, required skills and education, future prospects, and more. But the system doesn’t just throw a list at the user; it encourages them to explore, to dip their toes into different career waters and see what feels right.

Choosing a Career Path

Choosing a career can be a daunting task. After receiving the list of career matches, users can pick up to six careers to further explore. This shortlisting process led to the development of several tools designed to aid decision-making.

The voting tool, for instance, is based on the premise that our close ones know us well and can provide valuable insights. Users can share their shortlisted careers with friends and family, gather votes, and understand their viewpoints.

But external input, while valuable, must be complemented with self-reflection. This thought led to the Values Assessment tool, which gauges how well a career aligns with the user’s core values, giving them a percentage match. It’s like having an inner compass pointing towards the career that resonates most with their values.

And of course, professional advice can be invaluable, which is where the Career Counselor tool comes in. This feature facilitates interaction with career professionals who can provide nuanced guidance based on their expertise.

Selecting an Educational Pathway

Once a user has finally selected their career of interest, it’s time to explore how to get there. This is where Educational Pathway Selection, comes into play. Understanding that traditional university education is not the only route to a career, we decided to incorporate alternative pathways.

Whether users are interested in pursuing University Degrees, Certifications, Bootcamps, Apprenticeships/Internships, Online Courses/MOOCs, Vocational or Trade Schools, Self-Study, Entrepreneurship, or Mentorship or Coaching, we provide options. This feature was designed to encourage users to select the learning route that aligns best with their lifestyle, preferences, and goals.

Based on their chosen career and educational pathway, the system then generates relevant ‘Major Matches’. A detailed profile for each major or alternative education route is provided, encompassing information such as typical subjects, descriptions, sample lecture videos, etc.

Exploring Universities

For those who choose the University pathway, they are directed towards ‘University Matches’. Each university has a detailed profile, providing relevant information that would help the user make an informed choice. Those who choose other pathways are directed to relevant resources or programs.

Keeping Everything at Fingertips

Finally, with the User Dashboard, users have their career journey data centralized in one place. They can see their assessment results, career matches, and selected educational paths, among other things.

The Libraries

Career Studio’s libraries – the Careers Library, Majors Library, and Universities Library – are extensive databases that users can browse. Whether users want to explore more options or delve deeper into a particular career, major, or university, these libraries offer the flexibility to explore and learn at their pace.

*****

Creating Career Studio was not just about developing a career guidance system, but about creating a space where exploration, self-discovery, and practical guidance converged seamlessly. It was about building a user-friendly, accessible tool that could empower individuals to make informed decisions about their futures.
